Question by alicele: What hiking trails are really open during winter times in Seattle area?
Hi!
The Mountain Loop Hwy is closed, so many of the hiking trails are out of reach. Many people said the Boulder River Trail is great this time of the year but it’s not: I’ve been there twice now and there is too much snow.

Are there any trails in winter (untill May) still open? I don’t mind driving a few hours.

Thanks!

Answer by plattersby
I believe most of the lower trails in the Olympic National Park are open. The Storm King starting point west of Port Angeles has multiple trails starting there (including the easy 30 minute Marymere Falls trail), and it takes less than 2 hours to reach from Seattle via ferry from Seattle or Edmonds and drive across Hood Canal Bridge and through Sequim and Port Angeles).

SEATTLE TIMES — Firefighters are battling a fire at an apartment complex south of Seattle. The blaze is sending a plume of smoke that is visible from downtown Seattle and as far away as Tacoma. The fire broke out at the Lighthouse Apartments Sunday afternoon south of Seattle. The nonprofit Union Gospel Mission owns and operates the four-story, 18-unit apartment for low-income people. The group’s senior vice president Gary Fast says about 30 people had to flee the burning apartment building and that “everyone is accounted for.” He said two people were taken to hospitals but he did not know the extent of their injuries. Fast said “Everybody is shaken up. It’s a tough thing. Some of their vehicles were consumed in the fire, too.” The building has 18 units, but two were empty. *Post fire video here youtu.be

Question by Ali: College major to get dream job for The Seattle Times?
I’m going to be a freshman in college this fall and my dream job is to work as a journalist for The Seattle Times. I’m thinking about majoring in English and minoring in polysci OR majoring in English and minoring in film studies just because I’m also interested in film. Does it actually matter? I don’t exactly think i need to go study journalism specifically because I play on being very active in the school’s newspaper. Am i wrong?

Suggestions?

Nope, you’re right. You don’t have to major in journalism to be a journalist: English will work. Writing for the school paper will give you experience, for sure.
